Motor Neurone Disease at RBWH

The goa 7 Pillars Ride aims to raise funds for Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) Foundation. All funds raised through the event will be directed to Motor Neurone Disease (MND) research conducted at the hospital – where Queensland’s leading MND Clinic is located.

There is currently no known cause or no known cure for MND, but researchers at RBWH are working to develop reliable markers for the disease’s progression.  It is then hoped that these findings will be used to conduct clinical treatment trials which may either slow or cure MND.

ABOUT MOTOR NEURONE DISEASE (MND)

Imagine having a disease that progressively shuts down all of your voluntary muscles while your brain remains completely active.  Imagine being trapped in a body that you have absolutely no control over.

This is the reality for people with MND.

Progression of the disease is variable, but it cannot be stopped or slowed down.  All MND patients will eventually lose the ability to speak, swallow, move and breath.  Once diagnosed, life expectancy is between three and five years.

More than 1,200 Australians are currently living with MND and 400 new cases are diagnosed each year.  It may not seem a lot, but the effects of this disease are far-reaching as it has a significant impact on families and friends, many of whom need to become full-time carers.

ABOUT RBWH FOUNDATION

RBWH Foundation was first established in 1985 as the charity arm of Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, Queensland’s largest hospital.

The Foundation’s mission is to raise funds that will support Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) in furthering medical research and providing optimal health care and services.

Money raised by the Foundation, through donations, bequests, events and other activities, is therefore used to fund world-class clinical research conducted on the hospital campus, purchase vital pieces of equipment and enable medical staff to attend specialist training programs and conferences.
