The 7 Pillars Announced!
Overview
The goal of the event is for teams to reach the most Pillars (checkpoints) worth the maximum number of points in just 5 hours.
Each of the 7 Pillars will be worth a varying number of points depending on their degree of difficulty to reach.
For example, Pillars located furthest from the start line or that require tackling more challenging terrain (such as steep hills) will allow teams to accumulate more points.
Team strategy
Strategies & route options for reaching the Pillars will naturally vary between teams. It all depends how competitively or casually you wish to take the ride!
If your team wakes up with only 60kms in your legs, then feel free to enjoy the scenery & just visit a Pillar or two. But if your team’s in it to win it, then your strategy for reaching all 7 Pillars in the allocated time will be crucial.
Make sure you choose your team according to cycling ability, as all team members must be present at each Pillar before continuing. If any team members arrive early, they must wait for their fellow team members to arrive before riding on.
Points Tracking
Each team will be issued with a card to be hole punched upon their arrival at each Pillar. A team points total will then be calculated based on this card – and any penalties issued for breaking event rules – at the end of the ride. The team with the most points at the midday cut-off will be crowned the winner.
- Every minute after 12:00noon that your team is late – one point will be deducted from your overall points score.
- 75 points will be deducted for each rider unable to finish the event with their team.
- If several groups finish before 12noon with the same amount of points, the first team to reach the Hosital will take the lead.
- Note that you’ll need to have all team members present at each Pillar before heading off to the next.
Other Info
- Road bikes are recommended, as all Pillars will be accessible via sealed roads.
- Refreshments and snacks will be available at each Pillar, and first aid will rove between the Pillars as required.
- Please ensure your bike is serviced and in good condition. It is strongly recommended that cyclists come fully prepared with spare tubes, as well as sufficient nutrition & hydration.
- Teams are not permitted to travel via Lutwytche or Bowen Bridge Roads at any time – if your team is found on these roadways you will be disqualified from the event.
- A BBQ lunch will be available at the Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital following the event – we welcome all cyclists to join us.
